MEMS Barcode Reader

Abstract:

Since the concept of barcode scanning was proposed over forty years ago [I], the use of barcodes and barcode readers have progressed to the point that it is the most common method for automatic item identification. The proliferation of barcodes is aided by both the introduction of desktop computers and the advances in printing technology which make printing high-quality barcodes both fast and affordable. For two reasons, however, manufacturing a barcode reader -- a barcode reader with a scanner, in particular -- remains a time consuming and expensive task. First, certain performance requirements place tight tolerances on individual parts. Second, many parts are fabricated with incompatible processes that lead to the need for individual assembly. While it is true that performance issues such as durability and accuracy are essential, the design of a barcode reader, to be viable, must justify the cost of its implementation.
