In this talk I will explore the use of MEMS and electro-chemical sensors in combination with low-power radios to implement industrial wireless sensing applications. In particular, at the Chevron refinery in Richmond, fence-line gas sensing is added to security applications with regular reporting of H₂S, CO and VOC concentrations. I also look at using MEMS accelerometers and magnetometers to implement valve position monitoring and machine vibration sensing for safeguarding both personnel and equipment. This presentation is focused on both the COTS-based hardware and software behind each application.
