This discussion will cover various aspects of the patent process, but beginning with reasons why a person, company or university might consider filing patents in the first place. Individuals may file patents to protect their ideas prior to embarking on further research investment. A company might file patents to give them a bargaining chip in the competitive market place via standards groups, or as a means to license solutions to other companies. A university may want to protect its ideas as a way to recognize the institution and its innovators beyond publications, and also to provide a means to derive revenue by licensing the ideas to industry. In either case, the patent system is designed to provide a reliable institution for protecting ideas.
