As Earth’s population reaches 7 billion people, we are faced with unprecedented challenges that threaten our very existence. Rising energy consumption, coupled with our reliance on fossil energy resources, is changing the climate in ways that may lead to catastrophic consequences for us all. Clean air and water are becoming increasingly scarce commodities. Novel solutions are needed to maintain the quality of life of our growing and aging human population. This talk will describe my research developing MEMS-based solutions to problems in energy, environment, and, through microrobotics, healthcare. MEMS power system sensors and energy scavengers will help enable ubiquitous monitoring of the future Smart Grid, for example facilitating the integration of renewable energy resources. Air-microfluidic MEMS aerosol sensors will enable new types of portable lab-on-a-chip devices for measuring concentrations of airborne particulates, providing unique tools for recording personal exposure to harmful pollutants such as tobacco smoke and diesel exhaust. Mobile MEMS microrobots and multi-microrobotic systems capable of controlled self-assembly will provide a foundation for future in vivo microrobotic systems with tremendous potential in areas such as non-invasive surgery, tissue regeneration, and bio-molecular imaging.
