Millions of years of biological evolution has created a plethora of micro- and nanoscopic photonic structures that are frequently superior to synthetic analogs. These optically outstanding biophotonic structures fulfill various functions simultaneously, including mechanical integrity and protection against external contaminants such as microbes. I will present how the development of biomimetic nanophotonic devices with multiple functionalities can provide novel solutions in global energy provision and the health sector. Biophotonic nanostructures (BINS) in butterfly wing scales show unique optical properties with tailored structural disorder and can be replicated in a lab using a simple yet industrially-scalable bio-inspired nanofabrication technique. Prototyping these BINS for optoelectronic applications can significantly improve device performance. Another example will show that integrating multifunctional BINS onto optical micro-implants can solve the long standing problem of in-vivo biofouling, as well as poor optical readout, ensuring long-term and practical medical device performance.
