Integration of miniature functional devices on contact lenses provides a unique opportunity for collecting information from and providing information to a user. This talk provides a brief overview of recent efforts at the University of Washington to design, build, and test a contact lens that may incorporate small optical elements or sensors. The UW group has demonstrated the integration of antennas, small radios, and micron-scale light sources on contact lenses for displaying basic information to the contact lens wearer. The UW group has also worked in integrating a variety of biosensors on contact lenses and their wireless read-out for continuous health status monitoring.
