Batteries that power wireless autonomous transducer systems limit the possibilities of this emerging technology. The goal is to generate and store power at the microscale to improve autonomy and reduce size. Energy harvesters fabricated by microsystem technology can realize this goal. The choice of harvesting principle depends on the application and vibration, thermal, photovoltaic and radiofrequency power conversions are investigated at imec/Holst Centre. An overview of our latest results and remaining challenges will be given, with the focus on thermal and vibrational energy harvester fabricated with micro‐system technology. Also, the importance of a complete module will be discussed, including an efficient power management circuit and energy storage system. Our energy harvesting modules were used in demonstrators showing the feasibility for the use in wireless autonomous sensor systems. Application fields for these sensor systems are machine monitoring, predictive maintenance and body area networks.
