Fabricating micro-electrocorticography (µECoG) arrays with transparent oxide for the electrodes enables optical stimulation/readout of cortical neurons while simultaneously recording electro-physiological signals on the cortical surface via the µECoG array electrodes. The resulting hybrid optical/electrical system can be used to decompose and decode the electrical local field potentials (LFPs) that reach the µECoG on the surface of the cortex into contributions from different cell types and cortical layers. This information can in turn be used to build better µECoG based brain machine interface (BMI) systems.
