Our research focuses on developing synthesis, purification, and enrichment methodologies toward the economical production of carbon nanotubes with well-defined atomic structure. Several new catalysts, such as Co-MCM-41 and Co-TUD-1, have been developed to manipulate chiral structure of carbon nanotubes with increased precision. New methods were developed to purify and enrich nanotubes with specific properties, which are promising as a printable semiconductor material for flexible and printed electronics, and also are demonstrated to hold potentials in applications, such as energy storage devices, solar energy conversion, enzyme immobilization, and antibacterial coating. Moreover, our theoretical study also identified two new reaction pathways and the novel role of charge transfer in chirality selective synthesis of nanotubes. In order to minimize the environmental and health risks of carbon nanomaterials while maximizing their application potentials, we investigated several key factors, such as aggregation, metal residues, oxidative stress, metallicity and lateral dimension, in the antibacterial activity of both carbon nanotubes and graphene based materials.
